Thursday 3rd October – windsurf, Rivedoux Sud Plage *** sunny periods

Our plan was to leave the beautiful Ile de Re although not the most campervan friendly place it is a cyclist’s paradise and we have had a good few days here. However, the wind was blowing strongly so after checking the direction with the compass and map and with low water making the whole of the east side short of water, we headed down the west coast looking for a spot to sail. The trouble with a new spot like this is that it is a bit pot luck finding somewhere, although kiters help as you can see the kites up from miles away:) The first spot we tried was the Plage du Montray where a freestyler was rigging small but the wind was light. Several kiters were out at Sport des Grenetes but that was a wave spot and I only have slalom kit! We ended up at Rivedoux Sud Plage with one other French windsurfer in the car park. He was great and his English fantastic. We had several great chats, him moaning about the 18 euro (summer) toll to cross the bridge onto the island making it the most expensive road in France! The onshore wind was on the light side so I rigged big and floundered out. After a few slow runs the wind filled in and the sun even managed to show its face:) You could sail the length of the beach towards La Rochelle and the huge bridge. There was even a cruise liner in the harbour. The wind picked up quite strong for a while and the sea was the same as the last Island (Noirmoutier) a bit of a mess:( I stopped for lunch with Mag who had been on a long walk to the bridge but when I tried windsurfing again the wind had died and with high tide the shore break had picked up and I was trying not to trash my lovely new 7.8! We then headed to Le Goisil for our overnight stop and after tea we had a fantastic thunder storm:)
